Saturday 7th October, Gabriela Mistral Retrospective + open-mike! at The Moon, on Zoom

Perth Poetry Club has a retrospective on famous Chile poet, Gabriela Mistral + open-mike,

this Saturday 7th October, 2pm-4pm, at The Moon Café and on ZOOM.

Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957) was a Chilean poet and the first Latin American (man or woman) to win a Nobel Prize for Literature, in 1945.  Many of her poems are part autobiographical, responding to the circumstances of her life, love and loss.  She spent a good part of her life in diplomatic roles in Europe, Brazil, and the United States.

Mistral is remembered as a strong advocate for women's and children's rights and for equal access to education.

"Many of the things we need can wait.   The child cannot.  Right now is the time his bones are being formed, his blood is being made, and his senses are being developed.  To him we cannot answer ‘Tomorrow,’ his name is today.”

We will introduce Gabriela as a person, as a poet, as a free-thinker.

She was a school teacher when she first met a teenaged Pablo Neruda as a pupil and encouraged him to continue writing.  Both were to win Nobel Prizes, Gabriela being the first.

Join us to celebrate poetry at The Moon and on ZOOM from the back room.
