Saturday, 2nd September, Ian Lilburne + open-mike, at The Moon, on Zoom!

Perth Poetry Club has wonderful poet Ian Lilburne + open-mike this Saturday 2nd September, 2pm-4pm, at The Moon Café and on ZOOM.

It’s been said that lurking inside every arts manager is a frustrated creative.

No stranger to the Perth’s Arts scene, on his ‘retirement’ in 2016, Ian Lilburne crossed over from the dark arts of production to finally give his frustrated creative some light.  Before then he was best known as the founding director of Perth’s Artrage Festival, an early manifestation of the Perth Fringe, and the artistic director|manager of LUMINIOUSnight, the UWA Centenary extravaganza.  Now he is more likely to be found wandering the city with his Canon camera, writing online jazz reviews for XPress, reciting poetry at the Perth Poetry Club, performing his back catalogue of some 100 songs, or designing|making jarrah furniture and other wooden artifacts.

Musically Ian crafts classic songs in the key of Cohen―thinkative songs of the human conundrum.  His lyrics are reflective and poetic while his musical influences range from the Classic American Songbook through folk and pop to minimalism.  Over the past dozen years he has worked with professional producers to record three CDs of original material while also performing solo, in a duo with Sam Ray and other small ensembles at various venues in and around Perth, Albany and the Great Southern.

Of his song-writing Ian says:

‘My style has been influenced by prose fiction and poetry as much as popular song.  I love the wordplay and trickery you find in the modernist writers while the narrative twists of spy stories provide a rich seam to mine in shaping my narratives.  But my main lyrical influence remains Leonard Cohen.  As a teenager, when I first heard Laughing Lenny, a bomb went off. It has been reverberating through my imagination ever since.’
