Saturday 17th June, Fernando Pessoa (retrospective) + Thyago Barreto Vasconcelos + open-mike! at The Moon, on Zoom

Perth Poetry Club has wonderful poets Fernando Pessoa (retrospective) + Thyago Barreto Vasconcelos + open-mike

this Saturday 17th June, 2pm-4pm at The Moon Café and on ZOOM.

Fernando Pessoa has been described as “the greatest 20th century poet you have never heard of”, and one of the greatest poets in the Portuguese language. Writing obsessively in French, English and Portuguese, Pessoa left a prodigious body of work, and not only under his own name, for he created approximately seventy-five others, of which three stand out: Alberto Caeiro, Álvaro de Campos, and Ricardo Reis. He did not call them pseudonyms because he felt that this did not capture their true independent intellectual life and instead called them heteronyms. These imaginary figures sometimes held unpopular or extreme views.

Thyago Barreto Vasconcelos comes from northeast Brazil, from Sergipe the smallest state in Brazil. In Australia for almost 4 years, at 36 years of age, he used to work as a lawyer back in Brazil. Now he works as a chef in childcare (the best job he has had in his life).

“My biggest motivation in life is to make real connection with people and learn new perspectives, especially the ones that could change mine. My first meeting with poetry was very young, I think I was around 9 or 10, one week before the day I would have my first lesson in school on how to write a poem. My teacher asked everyone to write what would be the best Holiday, and to write it as a short history. I got scolded because everyone finished and I was still writing. The teacher asked, why I couldn't finish, and I said "it's the best holiday of my life, how can I finish it?". So when I got to learn about poetry she said, ‘you can put lots of meaning using less words’. I was fascinated because I could write in a few lines a history that would never finish.”

Thyago will read Pessoa in Portuguese. Elio Novello will assist in reading English translations. There also will be poems in French and in English that Pessoa wrote.
