Perth Poetry Club has wonderful poets, Javier Bateman & Kula-lee McKeon + open-mike
this Saturday 14th June, 2pm-4pm, at The Moon Café, 323 William Street Northbridge, and on ZOOM.
Javier Bateman (he/they) is a twenty-six-year-old queer, transmasculine poet, and museum worker living on unceded Whadjuk Nyungar Boodja. He has been previously published in Australian journals such as Enby Life, Blue Bottle Journal, Sunder Journal, Two Wolves Digest, and the poetry anthologies Grieve, Into the Wetlands, and Hello Keanu. He also writes for stage - most recently being commissioned as the librettist for the Zeewijk Passion which premiered in the Netherlands, and the Blue Room Theatre's ‘Love and Other Catastrophes’. Javier's poetry deals with diverse themes of grief, queerness, love, and nature. In his (limited) downtime, Javier is often found at home consuming media about sad cowboys.
Kula-lee McKeon is a proud Nyul woman living, learning and writing on Whadjuk Boodjar for over a decade. Hailing from Broome, where she spent the majority of her life, Kula-lee writes from her experiences, her feelings and her truth. With familiar connections to Gija, Nyikina, Guburn and Wongai country, she is never lost for inspiration or strength. An avid reader in her youth, she harnesses her love of reading, words and her culture into writing and storytelling.
Working in an accounting firm gives her the rigid foundation to create freely once she is no longer bound to her desk. Trading her mouse and keyboard for a notepad and pen, Kula-lee juggles her studies with her love and skill of writing. Kula-lee conjures her creative ideas and lets them take over, running from the pen to page. When Kula-lee isn’t busy with writing she can be found reading, buying books or talking about books with her bookclub.
