Saturday 11th September, Young Poets Showcase at the Moon and on Zoom!

This Saturday 11th September we have Young Poets Showcase + open-mike at Perth Poetry Club, mc-ed by Veronica Lake and PPC, VIA ZOOM at the Moon Cafe.

2021 has been a difficult year for everyone because of Covid.  It has impacted on our lives in many ways.  For Year 12 students who work under enormous pressure in their final year of school, Covid has added an extra dimension of stress.  Nonetheless, the young poets reading out their work today, have still found time to be creative and in this most special of genres.

All of the poets who are reading for this segment are still at school and just about to begin their final school examinations.  They have made time away from study to be with us here today in order to read out their poems.  Some of their work was for school ‘assessment’ and they have drawn inspiration from studied poets (choice of, and what a choice it is, of 55 Australian and International poets in the curriculum).  But also their work has allowed for interpretation of life events as well as diverse thinking about what it means to be human in this day and age.

All of them believed that the creativity involved in writing poetry brings individuals together, allows for wider thinking and invokes a disciplined manner of trying to say something worthwhile.

The young poets are Tallullah Pestell, Juliet Quinliven, Saskia Fleming & Thomas Hunt.  Their young and enthusiastic voices bring us a new generation of poets.  Listen and appreciate what it is they have to say.

This is a combined WA Poets/Perth Poetry Club event and includes regular open mike, mc’ed by Veronica Lake and Perth Poetry Club.  You can also Zoom in.

We will be at the Moon Café Northbridge with stage-mike for those unable to ZOOM in.

Veronica Lake is a teacher of Literature, and has been since before the dawn of time.  She edits the annual student poetry journal Primo Lux, which draws from students in high schools all over the state, and celebrates their distinctive voices and stories.  The journal has been in production now for 17+ years.  In 2010 Veronica was awarded a Churchill Fellow for the study of Shakespeare and the way it is brought to new generations.  She is a noted poet in her own right, and part of the Voicebox collective.

All the above with usual open mike as well.

Please join us to celebrate poetry this Saturday afternoon 2pm - 4pm.

The venue is     Moon Café, 323 William St, Northbridge and on ZOOM.
