Saturday 25th January, Ann Gilchrist + Robert Burns + open-mike!

This Saturday 25th January we have the wonderful poets Ann Gilchrist + Robert Burns to entertain us.

Ann Gilchrist spent her childhood on the banks of the Firth of Forth in Fife, Scotland.  She came to WA when she was 24.  She won her first award for poetry in primary school and has been waiting for another ever since.  Ann loves to capture visual images of moments, memories and landscapes in poetry.  She views her poems as canvases that don't need wall space.  Creativity is an important part of her life - it helps to keep her relatively sane.

Ann will take us on a journey into the life and times of Robert Burns, his legacy and importance in our world.

Robert Burns was a Scottish poet and lyricist.  He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide.  He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a light Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland.  He also wrote in standard English, and in these writings his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest. The majority of his poems are written in Habbie stanza, often now called the Burns stanza.  He is important to the Scottish psyche and sense of being, and this has added resonance with Brexit and Scotland’s resurgent desire for independence.  The occupation of Scottish homeland by the English/British also parallels the treatment/feeling of our First Nations’ people in Australia - especially relevant as we are on the cusp of “Australia Day”.

Ann will hand around a quaich, drinking cup, also known as the cup of friendship or loving cup. A few drams of the proverbial will go into it, and can be passed from poet to poet for a ‘wee nip’, if so inclined. Other readers helping Ann include Allan Padgett, Marion Whelligan, Coral Carter.

Please join us to celebrate poetry this Saturday afternoon 2pm - 4pm at the Moon Café, 323 William Street Northbridge with Ann Gilchrist + Robert Burns + open-mike.
