Perth Poetry Club has wonderful poets Jaya Penelope & Tim Heath (NZ) + open-mike this Saturday 10th June, 2pm-4pm at The Moon Café and on ZOOM.
Jaya Penelope has been a part of Perth’s poetry and performance community for over twenty years. She has hosted poetry readings, performed at local and interstate festivals, self-published three zines and a cd (all vintage items now) and been published in various literary journals.
Jaya runs Creative Writing Circles and storytelling nights from her home in Walyalup/Fremantle and hosts poetry and mindfulness weekends at The Origins Retreat Centre in Balingup several times a year. She is a self-confessed fairytale and folklore nerd.
Tim Heath is a New Zealander temporarily living in Fremantle while his wife works at Perth Children’s Hospital. He writes poetry and, occasionally, gets it published.
He was MC at Auckland’s Poetry Live for several years and has won Poetry Slams, in New Zealand and Australia including Poetry Idol, Womad, Going West, Burnie Gold Cup (Tasmania) and Bellingen (rural NSW).
Tim has published a memoir “The Accidental Teacher” (Allen and Unwin 2021) and a poetry collection, “Not as The Crow Flies”, (Eunoia Press 2018).
He writes about everyday life and believes poetry should straightforward, even funny. He spent his working life as a teacher, including ten largely happy years as Principal at Newton Central School in central Auckland. Now retired, time for writing is contentedly compromised by 10 grandchildren aged from 27 years to three months. He also enjoys reading, cooking, gardening, golf, ocean sailing, watching cricket, tending the multiple needs of an ageing wooden Grey Lynn villa … and dreaming.
