Saturday 10th July, Andre Burke, Andre de Bassendean + Andrew Shillam (NSW) + open-mike! on Zoom and the Moon

This Saturday 10th July 2pm-4pm we have wonderful poets Andrew Burke + Andre de Bassendean + Andrew Shillam (NSW) + open-mike at the Moon Café and on Zoom.

We are back at the Moon Café - folk will have to QR code in or sign in, and people will have to wear a mask unless eating or drinking.  You can QR table order or order at bar as normal.  There is a limit of 2 per square metre which means no more than 50 in the back room, and we have operated like that for a good 6 months so no need to worry really.

Andrew Burke interim bio…

Andrew Burke was born in Victoria in 1944, then moved to WA as a toddler.  He was educated there, then hitchhiked (in the ‘60s) to further his education at factories, etc, in Melbourne and Sydney.  After work at radio stations in Perth, he went on to be a Creative Director in advertising agencies, all the time writing stories, plays and poems.  In middle-age he went into academia, studying and lecturing in writing and literature.  Andrew has published thirteen poetry collections, one novel and a smattering of short stories, book reviews and literary criticism.

After five years living in the Riverina area of New South Wales, he returned to Perth in 2017.

Andrew was the first ever feature at Perth Poetry Club 12+ years ago.

Andre de Bassendean is an alter-ego or alerted ego.  In any case, he is a shadow of his former self (see his pic). Alas poor Andre does not have a wiki entry – we wonder why…

Andrew Shillam (NSW) in his own words…

I was born in Brisbane.  My parent bought a hundred acres of bush north of Grafton in the 1980s to build a mud brick house.  We lived in a tent, a tin shed and eventually moved into the house over the course of seven years.  We had no television and read books at night.   I studied Visual Art at the University of Newcastle in the 1990s and became involved in small poetry readings in café’s and Newcastle Poetry At the Pub. I  met the painter Rindi Salomon – we started exhibiting together in 1998, travelled and worked in the UK in the year 2000, then married and had children.  We have been exhibiting together ever since.

Alongside my visual arts practise I have written poetry since the early 1990s.  My early writing was free verse but for the past fifteen years I have concentrated on more traditional forms.  I’m interested in the music of poetry - its underlying structure of sounds.  Recently I have concentrated on writing modern sonnets, using a variation on the French sonnet as a vehicle to express myself.  I see my work as part of a tradition and admire poets such Keats, Yeats and Dylan Thomas.

It will be an interesting gig.

Please join us to celebrate poetry this Saturday afternoon 2pm - 4pm.

The venue is Moon Café, 323 William St, Northbridge and on ZOOM.
