Saturday 3rd October, John Clarke's Satirical Verse + open-mike!

This Saturday 3rd October it’s the John Clarke satirical verse event and open-mike at Perth Poetry Club, VIA ZOOM from THE MOON CAFÉ.

NOTE – THIS WILL BE A ZOOM EVENT ONLY. WE WILL BE ZOOMING FROM THE MOON BUT THERE WILL BE NO STAGE MIKE. Just a computer and a data projector, for this week.

Research by the late John Clarke (of Clarke & Dawe and Fred Dagg fame) clearly demonstrates that a great many of the world’s most famous poets were Australian.

Examples include:

• Alain Frost whose poems were liberally found by Robert Frost

• Arnold Wordsworth whose poem was stolen by William half-way across the Pyrmont Bridge

• Very Manly Hopkins who is indeed very manly

• Not to forget Rabbi Burns, Emmy-Lou Dickinson, R.A.C. Milne, Dorothy Parkinson, b.b. hummings, and many others

All are Australian, and all largely forgotten until the seminal study by John Clarke.

John Clarke (1948 – 2017) was a New Zealand-born comedian, writer and satirist who lived and worked in Australia from the late 1970s. He was a highly regarded actor and writer whose work appeared on the ABC in both radio and television and also in print.

John first shot to fame as Fred Dagg on TV, radio and album in the 70s. He became world famous reporter of the fictional sport of farnarkeling on the Gillies Report in the 80s. He partnered with Bryan Dawe to produce satirical mock interviews on political issues from 1989 till his death in 2017.

He was comedic script writer for The Games, The Man Who Sued God, Stiff, and The Brush-Off. He wrote and/or appeared in 31 films and TV series, 19 books, and 11 albums. He won many awards including 3 ARIAs, and was Patron of the Australian Poetry Centre.

We will compare words from these all-Australian poets and their more famous avatars.

The satirical readings will be interspersed between our regular open-mike.

The venue is Moon Café, 323 William St, Northbridge. A great place to be this Saturday afternoon 2pm-4pm.
